European Social Fund Regulation: A Step in the Right Direction But Needs Clearer Commitment to Invest in People

At lunchtime today, the European Commission launched its proposed provisions for the next European Social Fund programming period (2014-2020). Although it is a step in the right direction, proposals to introduce macro-economic conditionalities and lack of a genuine partnership principle risks alienating the very people it is supposed to help.
“The Commission’s proposed provisions for the next ESF programming period definitely go in the right direction. Within the next months, the legislative procedure now has to make sure that it does not end up in a dead-end street of fiscal consolidation but becomes a clear commitment to invest in people”, said SOLIDAR Secretary General Conny Reuter.
